The origin and development of humankind from prehistoric primitive forms is greatly attributed to use of speech. This development of speech reached greater heights such that vocal communication became part of the daily occurrences. Today coordination of activities does not only rely on this ability to express oneself well, but how people relate with others during such communication. Inter personal communication is greatly influenced by emotions and fueled by prejudice gained from previous communications. In the movie, the “Wit”, released in 2001 and directed by Mike Nichols the aspect of healthy communication is presented. The patient-doctor relationship is seen to be fueled not only by the current events, but also by past ones. This paper will vividly present the aspects and importance of healthy communication and the need of listening in everyday life during interpersonal communication.
The movie is based on a play authored by Edson Margaret. The main character Vivian Bearing stars as a university professor who during his lifetime strives to use her wit in everything she does. She relates very badly to the students and people she has come across to extent of people segregating her at her old age, at a period when she is found to be ailing from metastatic ovarian cancer at the age of 50. The motion picture revolves around her behavior, relationships with people, and reflections on life. When she is told that she will undergo some tests in the laboratory where by one of her former students will be attending her, she opts to use her high social status to dodge the questions directed to her. This forms a wrong basis for doctor patient communication, which is very crucial for treatment.
