Currently, news in all international media houses is full of depressing stories about the status economy of different nations and the ever increasing rate of unemployment, cost of living as well as reports about companies with massive layoffs. Due to the ever increasing level of unemployment throughout the globe, it is important that an individual only ventures into a career which is able to sustain him through a lifetime. The career should be able to impact positively on the lives of people around him both during his lifetime and long after he has passed away. The career should therefore have the potential to enable one to leave a legacy which will encourage other people to venture into the same career. According to Harry Ford, business is not mere money chasing; it should focus and aim at serving the community as well. Therefore the best career one should consider joining today that will serve both individual and societal needs is none other than business. Business plays an important role in improving the economy and creating employment opportunities (United States Department of Labor).
The corporate world is wide and the most interesting to live in as it provides diversified means through which individuals can survive. Nonetheless, it also has challenges here and there which must be tackled at one point or the other. Most people believe that those who venture into business get stable faster than people who have been employed while others also believe that it is very much risky in terms of returns. This is not the case since it all depends on how one plans his or her game.
Being in the business field is quite challenging given the fact that technology keeps on advancing day by day. Today, many people engage in multimillion deals in business that include trading on forex and stock markets, online research, data entry and sales and purchases of various items at the comfort of their homes over the internet. This means that to be in business, one must not drive or walk to work every day. However, there is no career that is completely void of disadvantages. As a business man one has to be very innovative, active and should have the spirit of doing it all alone when no one backs him up. One should seek new information on the financial strategies, analyze market situation and look for new opportunities where he can invest more. One should also be ready to act as a risk taker rather than a risk evader since business is all about taking risks, venturing into new areas which people have never thought of and expanding on areas where gaps still exist.
An individual who picks business as a career is therefore guaranteed that he will always find a means of surviving since there are always gaps to be filled and new areas to be explored as business environment is an ever changing arena. Most people consider themselves as good investors. This is a ‘must have’ characteristic for survival in the corporate world. One must be ready to invest and investment does not just mean more money to handle but also growth in economy (Business Programs in the USA.Com).
Business is a growing and vibrant field of study which opens entry into a great number of possible business careers as well as enhances access to career in other fields. Today’s job market has become more viable and employers’ anticipation of the work force personnel they need in their companies keep on changing. Higher levels of education are therefore vital for one to be able to survive in the job market. Business courses offer soft skills which include management and team based skills, decisive skills, time management and communication skills. They also offer hard skills which include technical and general discipline skills. The business courses therefore help people to develop the essential skills for success in the business world. Therefore, considering a career in business enables one to develop skills to tackle problems in the corporate world using innovative methods which have been proved to work through modern solutions. Some of the courses that somebody who wishes to pursue a career in business should consider include business administration or management, commercial management, marketing, finance, accounting, arts and media management (Business Programs in the USA.Com). Most of these careers in business always pay well and relatively highly.
Business degrees can also be applied in the management of many other fields such as educational sectors, public administration sectors, technology and science based fields. The skills acquired in business courses can therefore be applied widely in other careers including the non-profit making organizations. Based on these facts, one should consider majoring in business career since it is an exciting field; it offers relevant education for survival and enables one to secure a brighter future in this competitive ever growing economy.
The main importance of business as a career is that it provides goods and services to consumers through the entrepreneurs. In producing goods, manufacturing companies use agricultural, mining, forestry and fishing materials to make a variety of consumer goods as well as capital goods which are needed by customers to keep business running. The business also plays a significant role in distributing goods which have already been produced thereby ensuring that they are available to the consumers at the right time, place and price. Movement of goods from one place to another is facilitated by the transport industry in collaboration with the business. It has also played a major part in raising the living standards of many people around the globe through self employment who own their businesses or as employees of different business organizations as well as paying taxes to various host governments (United States Department of Labor).
As a coin has two sides, the business world has importance also presents some disadvantages. Employees of different business organizations are being down trodden by their employers so much that they do not have room to establish their own businesses. This is due to the fact that many organizations are more profit oriented than welfare oriented thereby ignoring both human values and worker comforts. It has also ignored the welfare of consumers and suppliers. Businesses also act as major pollutants of the environment especially the manufacturing industries.
The corporate world offers a variety of jobs; therefore for one to ensure that he gets a job with at least one of the big names in the business field, he has to be realistic about the job he qualifies for. Most job opportunities are not always advertised on well known job search sites or magazines; however the business world offers many corporate sites where job openings are posted by various companies. From these sites one is able to view all the available job openings and apply where he feels he best fits and qualifies. One should also try to develop ties with other potential hiring personnel in the field so that they can be connected to organizations with job openings from a personal point of view.
There are many companies which hire in various fields in the business world. Therefore one has to be aggressive about job search and try to find companies with job openings. For instance, retail salespersons occupied almost 4.5 million jobs in 2008 out of which around 156,000 were self employed. This is so due to the fact that retail stores are found almost everywhere within business centers making employment to be evenly distributed within the world. Employment of sales representatives, general and manufacturing, is also projected to grow by 7 percent between 2008 and 2018 thereby creating about 143,000 new job positions. Job prospects will therefore be available to those who have college degrees, appropriate technical skill and the correct personality for selling. Job opportunities are also projected that they will be better in sales companies than manufacturing companies (United States Department of Labor).
In conclusion, I would advise the upcoming generation to pursue career in business related fields since business degrees open doors to almost every career in the job market. One can acquire transferrable skills such as leadership and logistic thinking which enables one to develop confidence in whatever field he ventures on. It is also only business degrees which can attract higher starting salaries and valuable networking recourses.
