Factors to consider in designing a saline water conversion system A saline water conversion system converts saline water (sea water or brackish water) to fresh water. Such a system produces two main products: fresh water and brine. Salinity is the concentration of salts (sodium chloride) in water measured in grams (g/l) of NaCl per liter of water. Fresh water has a salinity level less than 0.5 g/l of NaCl. The source of saline water (raw water) determines its salinity. This also determines the concentration of brine. For instance, Water in estuarine bays has a lower than water in Open Ocean since estuarine bays get fresh water from rivers, surface run-offs, municipal wastes, and industrial wastes.
